DESCRIPTION:November 2-4\, 2018\, Siff Cinema Uptown\, Seattle\, WA\n\n\n\nJoin ARCS\, the Seattle-based non-profit American Romanian Cultural Society (ARCS)\, for an exploration of the blurred frontiers of reality through Romanian films\, celebrating the 5th Edition of the Romanian Film Festival in Seattle. \nIn tune with the Halloween spirit of the first week in November\, take an imaginary journey to Romania\, and its „Uncanny Worlds”. We plan to challenge values and beliefs in relation to the unusual\, unfamiliar\, ineffable\, incomprehensible\, unfathomable\, inscrutable\, or the unclear\, inviting you to a visual feast of mesmerizing film features and documentaries. You will find out that Romanian films\, more than ever\, reflect the uncanny aspects of reality\, history\, politics\, everyday life\, as well as spirituality\, folklore\, and traditions; in a word\, the uncanny essence of human nature. \nFor this celebratory 5th edition\, we are thrilled to share the work of an outstanding guest and artist\, Daniel Ursache. DESCRIPTION:The 75th Anniversary of the famed ‘Tidal Wave’ bombing raid over Ploiesti on Aug 1\, 1943\, will be celebrated in Bucharest.\nThe event will feature “Knights of the Sky”\, a documentary directed by Nicholas Dimancescu.\n\n< http://kogainon.com/k/knights-of-the-sky-air-war-over-romania/ >\n\nThe documentary “Knights of the Sky” is presented through the eyes and words of Nicholas Dimancescu. He journeys back to Romania both to uncover the stories of American and Romanian airmen who raided and defended Romania’s Ploesti oil refineries during World War II.\n\nThe experiences of wartime fighter pilot ‘aces’ on both sides are recounted. Two of them\, once enemies who attacked one another over Romania\, meet for the first time 66 years later.\n\nAlso told is the first-ever low-level “Tidal Wave” bombing raid launched from Libya against Romania’s oil refineries on August 1\, 1943. Interviewed is the captain of the famed “Sandman” B-24.

SUMMARY:Book Launch July 12: Bucharest Diary\, by former Amb\, Alfred Moses
DESCRIPTION:In the 1970s\, American attorney Alfred H. Moses was approached on the streets of Bucharest by young Jews seeking help to emigrate from Communist Romania to Israel. This became Moses’ mission until the Communist regime fell in 1989. In the ensuing years\, he periodically met with dictator Nicolae Ceausescu to confirm the right of Jews to freely leave the country. \nIn recognition of Moses’ work\, President Clinton appointed him as his first ambassador to Romania (1994 – 1997)\, where Moses played a key role in helping Romania move from its Communist past to democracy and to establish a free economy. \nIn his new book\, Bucharest Diary: An American Ambassador’s Journey\, Moses includes first-hand accounts of the diplomacy\, both public and private\, that helped Romania recover from four decades of Communist rule. As ambassador\, he facilitated negotiations between Romania and neighboring Hungary and Ukraine that resulted in treaties resolving border and other disputes. As a result\, Romania was invited to join NATO and the European Union\, and currently has the fastest growing economy in Eastern Europe. For his efforts\, Moses was awarded the Marc Cruce medal by the Romanian Government\, the only American to receive this distinction. \nMoses is chairman of UN Watch\, the author of several books\, and has written articles for publications including The New York Times and The Washington Post. Moses also served as special counsel to President Carter (1980 – 1981) and special presidential envoy for the Cyprus conflict (1999 – 2001). DESCRIPTION:We will be joining again this year all those who celebrate around the world „The Universal Day of the Romanian Blouse” and we will mark the event here in Washington\, DC on Saturday\, June 23 at 5 pm in Lafayette Square in front of the White House. This is the same location where in 2015 we read the proclamation issued by the Mayor of Washington\, DC recognizing June 24 as the Day of the Romanian Folk Costume in the Nation’s Capital and thus conferring its first official recognition. \nI hope that in this most important year marking the 100 year anniversary of the modern Romanian state\, the Romanian community in Washington\, DC will answer this invitation and will come together to mark the event and to show its unity and the importance of our community. On that day\, Romanians and those who love and appreciate Romania and its culture\, are asked to wear a traditional Romanian blouse or shirt. The participants are also encouraged to bring Romanian flags and other folk items which could be used as the setting for the pictures taken at this event. \nThe Universal Day of the Romanian Blouse is a celebration of the traditional Romanian blouse (ia) uniting around the globe all those who cherish Romania and its folk costume. Coordinated by the online community La Blouse Roumaine\, the day\, first marked in 2013\, has become a truly global event celebrated on six continents\, in over 50 countries\, 109 cities\, and through over 200 events.
