SUMMARY:Book Launch: Intellectuals and Fascism in Interwar Romania
DESCRIPTION:The Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars\, invites you on Thursday\, January 23 starting at 2:00 pm to discuss Cristina Bejan’s latest book „Intellectuals and Fascism in Interwar Romania: The Criterion Association (Modernity\, Memory and Identity in South-East Europe).” She will be joined by Professor Vladimir Tismăneanu\, Director of the Center for the Study of Post-communist Societies at University of Maryland (College Park). The event will take place at the Center located in the Ronald Reagan Building and International Trade Center\, One Woodrow Wilson Plaza\, 1300 Pennsylvania\, Ave.\, NW\, Washington\, DC. \nIn 1930s Bucharest\, some of the country’s most brilliant young intellectuals converged to form the Criterion Association. Bound by friendship and the dream of a new\, modern Romania\, their members included historian Mircea Eliade\, critic Petru Comărnescu\, Jewish playwright Mihail Sebastian and a host of other philosophers and artists. Together\, they built a vibrant cultural scene that flourished for a few short years\, before fascism and scandal splintered their ranks. Cristina A. Bejan asks how the far-right Iron Guard came to eclipse the appeal of liberalism for so many of Romania’s intellectual elite\, drawing on diaries\, memoirs and other writings to examine the collision of culture and extremism in the interwar years. The first English-language study of Criterion and the most thorough to date in any language\, this book grapples with the complexities of Romanian intellectual life in the moments before collapse. \nCristina A. Bejan is a Rhodes and Fulbright scholar. She has had fellowships at the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum (USHMM)\, the Wilson Center and Georgetown University. She received her Masters and DPhil in Modern History from the University of Oxford and her BA in Philosophy (Honors) from Northwestern University\, where she also studied theater. While a researcher for USHMM\, she authored 64 articles on camps in Africa and Europe for the “Encyclopedia of Camps and Ghettos – Vol. 3.” Most recently she taught history at Duke University. A playwright and spoken word artist\, her creative work has appeared in the US\, UK\, Romania and Vanuatu. Bejan runs the arts and culture collective Bucharest Inside the Beltway\, based in Denver\, CO and Bucharest\, Romania. \nVladimir Tismăneanu is a Professor of politics and Director of the Center for the Study of Post-communist Societies at University of Maryland (College Park)\, President of the Presidential Commission for the Analysis of the Communist Dictatorship in Romania (April 2006–March 2007)\, and since April 2007\, Chairman of the Presidential Consultative Commission for the Analysis of the Communist Dictatorship in Romania. He left communist Romania in 1981. In 1983\, he joined the Foreign Policy Research Institute in Philadelphia as a research associate and a contributing editor to ORBIS. Since 1990 he has been teaching at University of Maryland\, Department of Government and Politics\, receiving in 2003 the University of Maryland Distinguished Scholar-Teacher Award. In 2004\, his book\, ”Stalinism for All Seasons” was granted the „Barbara Jelavich Award” by the American Association for the Advancement of Slavic Studies (AAASS). He serves as chair of the Editorial Committee of East European Politics and Societies and is also a member of the editorial boards of Human Rights Review\, Studia Politica\, and Journal of Democracy. For more than two decades he’s been a permanent collaborator of Radio Free Europa\, Voice of America\, Deutsche Welle and BBC and writes a weekly column for the influential Romanian daily Evenimentul Zilei. \nBooks will be available for sale at $20 (cash or check) and the author will be available to sign them.

SUMMARY:NY Romanian Film Festival "The Romanians: 30 Years of Cinema Revolution"
DESCRIPTION:„For its 2019 edition\, Making Waves celebrates the 30 years since the Revolution of 1989 with a comprehensive 30-Film Retrospective of Romanian Cinema of the Past 30 Years\, the largest Romanian film program presented in the U.S. to date. The program will run at Film Forum in New York City from November 15-26\, 2019. A selection of the retrospective will tour throughout the U.S. through May 2020.  The line up of the festival is posted here:  https://makingwaves.filmetc.org/schedule/films/. \nBack in 2005\, a three hour-long black comedy about a dying man made history by resurrecting Romanian cinema. The Death of Mr. Lăzărescu was part of the birth of an artistic revolution that ignited an ever-growing international interest in an outstanding generation of filmmakers. It also triggered the rediscovery of past highlights which offered a genealogy for what critics came to call the Romanian New Wave. \nSpanning the 30 years since the 1989 Romanian Revolution and the fall of Communism\, this comprehensive showcase presents 30 representative titles from the recent history of Romanian cinema. Naturally\, history is the running theme in most films. In the 1990s\, directors who found themselves freed from the tyranny of censorship rushed out in the open to tell stories from the recent past. In the following two decades\, younger directors went back in time on their own terms and came up with a fresh perspective on the communist era. Even when they chronicled the present in sharp slices of life\, the dark shadows of the past still permeated their contemporary stories\, like familiar ghosts. And then there is the enigma of the Revolution itself\, which continues to beg for closure. \nNewer films dig into the more distant though equally relevant past\, and there is also escapism\, mostly in genre formats. But despite its apparent diversity\, this vast retrospective works best as a history lesson served in the most entertaining form: movies.” \n\nThe Romanians: 30 Years of Cinema Revolution\nA retrospective initiated by the Making Waves Film Festival & Cinema Projects\nOriginated at Film Forum New York (Nov 2019) and touring throughout the U.S.\nProduced by Corina Șuteu and Oana Radu\nCurated by Mihai Chirilov\, Corina Șuteu\, and David Schwartz (Cinema Projects)\nWith the support of the Trust for Mutual Understanding\, Romanian Filmmakers Union\, Dacin Sara\, the Romanian National Film Center\, Blue Heron Foundation and numerous individual donors\nFilm notes: Mihai Chirilov/David Schwartz

DESCRIPTION:Celebrating 30 years since the Fall of the Berlin Wall\, the 6th edition of the Seattle Romanian Film Festival\, entitled „One Eye Laughing\, One Eye Crying: Stories OFF the Wall”\, brings you Romanian and Eastern European cinema echoing the political\, economic and existential dilemmas that have reshaped Europe in the aftermath of the Cold War. Bounced OFF a wall that divided families\, generations and nations\, these stories harness the unifying power of film to create new bridges\, in a universal quest for shared meaning. \n\n \nWe have made history together: from one of the smallest venues in town with 93 seats (in 2014)\, we have upgraded the festival to the largest auditoriums @ SIFF CINEMA Uptown with 275 seats (between 2015-2018). From about 750 viewers attending the first edition\, we have been reaching approximately 2\,300 people every year. From an ethnic film festival\, we have succeeded in creating an authentic Seattle experience where people of all backgrounds watch internationally acclaimed films\, learn something about Romanian heritage\, laugh and cry together\, proving that the festival has earned its title „One Eye Laughing\, One Eye Crying”. \nCheck out the full lineup for the 6th Edition of The Romanian Film Festival Seattle (November 15-17 at SIFF Cinema Uptown). More than in any other years\, this year’s edition offers you the BEST of European cinema\, with films that received over 30 national and international prizes! \nhttps://www.arcsproject.org/film-festival.

SUMMARY:Reinventing Realism: New Cinema from Romania Film Festival - Washington D.C.\, June 1-6
DESCRIPTION:D.C. friends\, mark your calendars for June 1 to 16 for some Romanian movies that received several international awards: ‘One Step Behind The Seraphim’\, ‘Alice T’\, ‘Infinite Football’\, ‘Marita’\, ‘Pororoca’\, ‘Charlestone’\, ‘Moromete Family: On The Edge of Time’. The cultural indulgence is due to Ambasada României în Statele Unite ale Americii / Romanian Embassy in US\, Romanian Cultural Institute in New York\, and the National Gallery of Art in Washington DC. More to come about the Festival soon. \nScreenings to take place at the National Gallery of Art in Washington.  From the National Gallery: \n„Since the late 1990s a group of intellectually adventurous filmmakers from Romania has been enlivening the European art scene with a steady stream of robustly realistic films that tackle moral and ethical issues\, and make thought-provoking parables from everyday events. At the same time these filmmakers\, working collaboratively\, have set up a discourse about contemporary societal and civil issues that hover over Europe. This series is the last in a cycle of three retrospectives at the National Gallery of Art to focus on Romania’s New Wave — earlier installments took place in 2007 and 2017. The Gallery wishes to thank the Embassy of Romania and the Romanian Cultural Institute for their partnership.” \nImage:  still from One Step Behind the Seraphim \nhttp://bit.ly/Alianta_RoFilms_WashingtonDC

SUMMARY:La Blouse Roumaine: Traditional Textiles\, Art & Cultural Fashion
DESCRIPTION:From the Romanians of DC organization: \nYou are cordially invited on Thursday\, May 16 at 5:30 pm at the Textile Museum (701 21st Street\, NW\, Washington\, DC) to attend the official launch of the concept of the brand new La Blouse Romaine Magazine presented by Andreea Tănăsescu\, the founder of the Universal Day of the Romanian Blouse social movement and President of IA Association. The launch will be followed by a moderated discussion on the importance of the folk costume as an identity marker and a source of identity and of inspiration with: Dorian Branea\, Director of the Romanian Cultural Institute in New York; Sonia Coman-Ernstoff\, Fellow at Smithsonian’s Freer Gallery\, and moderated by Bogdan Banu\, Founder of Romanians of DC. The event will also feature a small collection of traditional Romanian folk costumes from the Collection of Bogdan Banu. This is a free event but prior registration is required here: http://romanianblouse.eventbrite.com \nCultural diplomacy takes many shapes and forms. The forms and ornaments found on the Romanian folk blouses are just the latest and probably most unusual manifestation of what cultural diplomacy can be. Unbeknown to most\, the Romanian blouse is truly an universal cultural icon. Worn by celebrities\, part of cultural revolutions such as the hippie movement in the 60s\, loved by famous fashion designers world-wide\, and an inspiration for famous artists or movie characters\, the Romanian blouses trace their origins back to the ancient civilizations found along the Danube river thousands of years ago. They preserve a part of the language of signs and symbols specific to the mythical thinking of those times. \nIn 2013 a truly global social and cultural movement was born in Romania centered on the Romanian Blouse. It was a movement born out of a desire to preserve and pass on to a new generation this symbol so central to the Romanian identity. Romanians around the world were asked to post a photo or a selfie wearing their blouses on social media as a way to reach and educate a wider public. In just six short years the movement has grown exponentially to some 200\,000 member\, celebrated annually on six continents\, over 60 countries and some 300 cities. The Universal Day of the Romanian Blouse is now celebrated like a national holiday in both Romania and the Republic of Moldova and has been recognized by governments in Washington\, DC\, Canada and elsewhere. \nAndreea Tănăsescu is the creator and founder of La blouse roumaine movement that has contributed decisively to the rebirth and renewed interest in traditional Romanian culture on a global scale. She is the creator of the Universal Romanian Blouse Day\, Brâncuși Week and Cultural Fashion Day and the President of La blouse roumaine IA Association\, a non-governmental organization that promotes the preservation of the Romanian textile heritage\, cultural and sustainable fashion. In 2017 Andreea started Give Credit that militates for culturally responsible design and now she is currently working on the development La blouse roumaine magazine. She studied Law and Public Relations and she has been involved in the fashion\, media and movie industry for more than 20 years as a talent agent and casting director for major international film productions as The Fall by Tarsem Singh\, Callas Forever by Franco Zeffirelli\, Amen by Costa Gavras\, Modigliani by Mick Davis. \nSonia Coman-Ernstoff is a Romanian-born art historian and poet. She received a B.A. from Harvard and a Ph.D. in Art History from Columbia\, where she taught an undergraduate seminar on the soft power of ceramic arts across world cultures. As the Anne van Biema Fellow at the Smithsonian’s Freer Gallery\, Dr. Coman is currently preparing a book manuscript on the formation and legacy of Charles Lang Freer’s collection of Japanese ceramics. Her poetry has been published and awarded internationally. Her latest book\, Passages\, was shortlisted for The Haiku Foundation’s Touchstone Distinguished Book Award. \nDorian Branea\, cultural diplomat\, cultural entrepreneur\, author and translator\, is currently the Director of Romanian Cultural Institute in New York. Previously he was a Fellow at the Central European University (2003-2004)\, Founding Director of the Romanian Cultural Institute in Warsaw (2006-2010) and Director of the Romanian Cultural Institute in London (2010-2018). He also served between 2012 and 2014 as President of the London association of cultural institutes from the EU countries (EUNIC).
