250 Years of Liberty: A Shared Promise Between America and Romania

Today, we commemorate a truly historic milestone—July 4, 2026, the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence. Two and a half centuries ago, a group of visionaries made a bold and unprecedented decision: to found a nation on the enduring ideals of liberty, equality, and self-government.

That declaration was far more than words on parchment—it was a promise. A promise tested through generations, challenged in moments of crisis, and strengthened by the resolve of those who believed in it. Each generation has been called upon to define these ideals and bring them closer to reality.

Today, we do more than reflect on history—we reaffirm our commitment to the future. We celebrate the progress achieved, the resilience that has defined this nation, and the countless individuals who have shaped its story.

But, this milestone is also a moment of responsibility. The work of building a more perfect union is never complete. It requires each of us to carry forward the values of freedom, opportunity, and justice so they remain alive and meaningful for generations to come.

We are guided by the timeless words of the Declaration of Independence: "We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness."

The cause of freedom has never been confined to one nation. Romania’s journey toward democracy reflects these very same principles—commitment to liberty, respect for individual rights, and faith in self-government. Having witnessed and supported that journey firsthand, I have seen the courage and determination of the Romanian people. In choosing this path, Romania stands alongside the United States in affirming that these values are universal, enduring, and worth defending.

Together, our nations demonstrate that freedom, once achieved, is strengthened through partnership, shared purpose, and a common belief in human dignity.

We are also reminded that defending these ideals is an ongoing responsibility. In a world where forces opposed to freedom continue to challenge democratic values, the United States, Romania, and our allies must stand firm. We reaffirm our commitment to resist tyranny, uphold the rule of law, and protect the fundamental rights of our citizens.

As President Ronald Reagan reminded us, "Freedom is never more than one generation away from extinction. It must be fought for, protected, and handed on."

Today, let us honor the past, appreciate the present, and commit ourselves to the future. Let us continue striving toward the ideals that inspired a nation 250 years ago.

Let us not forget the enduring words of President John F. Kennedy: "Ask not what your country can do for you—ask what you can do for your country."

Thank you, and Happy Fourth of July.

May God bless the people of Romania and of the United States of America.
